A Night at the Movies

Nicky Harris, July 23, 2009

Last night was the special screening of Coco Avant Chanel. A crowd of fashionistas gathered in Harvey Nichols, sipped champagne and ate teeny weeny canapes. Then it was off to the movies.

Tweed suits, quilted bags with shoulder length chains are just some of the enduring legacies of Mademoiselle Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel. Born into poverty, abandoned by her father to an orphanage she was the embodiment of the modern woman long before the modern woman existed. She released women from their corsets and gave women freedom. Coco Chanel was the first to introduce comfortable trousers, to use costume jewellery and raise hems above knee. The inventor of the LBD with style that endures.

Audrey Tatou is sublime in the role of Chanel and the movie is out on 31st July. It is subtitiled but don’t let that put you off. A movie about Chanel in English doesn’t bear thinking about.

Talking of women, check out http://makeithappenforwomen.com for great tips on how to harness your undoubted talents. I firmly believe that us women could sort out the economic mess and it never fails to amaze me at just how resourceful, optimistic and talented Irish business women are. If we could just bottle it?………

  1. I will be writing more about the Movie Coco Avant Chanel and about her life in much more detail over the coming week and will post it as a page. Mademoiselle Chanel had a most interesting life which she often was less than truthful about. I will be reviewing the film on RTE radio 1 on 31st July at 9 am on the Tubridy show. It will be podcast and I will post the link. Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel was a true Icon of fashion and stlye her clothes, like her life are to be celebrated.
