A March on Spring/Summer Trends2010

Nicky Harris, January 9, 2010

As I look towards the start of Spring Summer 2010 I am bombarded by what I am told by Fashion Editors and Fashion Websites lists of what will be the Key Trends of the coming Season. At this stage ‘Cluttered’ is how I would describe the lists and editing and predicting trends with legs and those that won’t go the full journey are where I’m at at the moment.

So here is my predictions for Trends with legs.

1. Future Warrior- This is where Military and Tribal collide. Leather tops and jackets will be strong in soft tan, chain mail, tribal motifs and ancient jewellery inspired by Ancient Rome, Egypt and the Celts rather than the modern military. If all this seems a bit much it’s because the designers are trying to play safe and have given us lots of leeway in our own interpretation of this trend. This is both a confident and strong look and open to interpretation.

  • Sass and Bide

  • 2. Sporty casual will be the Street Wear of Spring Summer 2010. There a touch of the 80′s here but we’re not talking about sweaty aerobics Jane Fonda style or Juicy tracky’s. It’s more American Football (shoulder power) tennis and dance. Accessorise with messy hair. Jersey tapered track suits and lots of lacing. A look that has tomboy cool written all over it.

bottega2 sportyThere are some Trends that will carry forward from last year and three of the strongest are Boyfriend Blazers these will be worn again with tapered/carrot trousers t-shirts and high heels. Sheer fabrics which will be worn in softer colours will be everywhere. Fine mesh tops worn over vintage style underwear or more discreetly. A look that can be worn in several different ways. Distressed denim which we saw last summer will re-emerge and we will also see patchwork denim. This Summer denim will be seen top to toe. A look we haven’t seen since the 80′s. White will again be a perennial in lots of feminine dresses. For colour candy floss pastels and neutrals will be everywhere.

All in all this coming season will have something for everyone. As the designers remain a little unsure we continue to have more latitude and are able to wear and re-wear clothes from the past. I’d love to think that we will buy less and better rather than the disposable pieces we so easily purchased, wore and discarded of the past.
