Bloggers are making headlines (at least in the Fashion World) and are arriving enmasse at catwalk shows whenever and wherever designers are placing their ramps. Most of the bloggers that are centre stage are young. Well I guess what I mean is much younger than me. If you are at all curious about this new species and wonder what they wore to the shows take a look at this.

What am I wearing to London in a couple of days? Haven’t a clue yet is the truth. I will panic the night before I leave like I usually do. There’s only one thing I definitely know I will be wearing and it’s one big smile!

Marc Jacobs does Gentle and Stylish for Autumn 2010

Marc Jacobs presented an altogether more gentle collection in New York last week for Autumn Winter 2010. With Period references from the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and beyond it seems that Marc Jacobs has succeeded in shunning the fast moving modernity and has managed to produce clothes that are flattering. Skirt were calf length and there was little flesh on show. Demure and in a neutral palette he referenced previous garments from his archive changing them slightly. A collection, very wearable which looks back yet is forward in it’s feminine yet strong appeal. A small yet modern twist were the ankle stirrup socks worn over the shoes and ankle boots.

Shop and Restyle your Wardrobe

Nicky Harris, February 17, 2010

It’s time to go through your wardrobe and take out the older members on the rails. Take a good hard look at what you have. You can restyle dresses, remove sleeves, change lapels, shorten lengths and change neck lines. Wide legged trousers can be tapered to a more modern shape. Lapels on jackets can be narrowed. If you can’t do the job yourself and lets face it how many of us can? then look no further than the new Tailoring and Alteration shop on Drury St in Dublin. Two boyhood friends Jeff and Glenn saw an opportunity and Fitz opened a few weeks ago. With a team of top class people and a reasonable price list (some others are truly very expensive) I think they have a winning business in the making. Fitz offers a one hour express service for simple jobs and also a dry cleaning service. A definite win win and a shop that will certainly be getting a lot of business from me.

Jesire, promises of a Bright Summer

Nicky Harris,

Jesire is a brand that I have often looked at in Brown Thomas but I have to admit to not really paying it much attention. The Spring Summer Press day took place last week and curiosity brought me in to take a look. There are three collections within the range, a younger diffusion range, a small boutique collection and the main Jesire collection. Quite honestly I’m not sure about the different collections because as a customer I simply gravitate to what I like and whether it comes from one group or another is not important. What is striking about Jesire is the use of colour and the fact that they have translated key trends into very wearable pieces that could go from day to night. New items arrive monthly so the offer remains fresh. I think the prices are fair given the fabrics, cut, quality and above all wearability. Here are the looks I picked out. Available now from Brown Thomas Dublin

Great Holiday Dress 205 euro

Cardi 169euro Dress 149euro

Silk Tunic Dress with Great Sleeve 175 euro

My favorite Knit 2 Piece (The top is long)

Om Diva Revisited

Tags: — Nicky Harris, February 15, 2010

On a very cold and damp day in Dublin I was up to my eyes in the showroom. What better way to cheer myself up than a visit to the Georges Street Arcade for a mooch around Om Diva. Like a sweet shop, Om Diva is a riot of colour and brim full of goodies to choose from. Great ethically sourced clothes for women and children jostle for space with accessories and shoes. The Vintage section is great value and a Sip and Stitch class which runs weekly is hugely popular. Ruth Ni Loinsigh has a great eye and has the unique ability to cheer up even the most gloomy shopper. With a sale in full swing and lots to choose from, here are a few pictures to wet the appetite. Rag Tales Fashion News Round Up

Tributes are pouring in following ‘Lee’ Alexander Mc Queens death last week. Sales of his trademark skull scarves and all things carrying his label are being bought up in stores across the world. On Friday his Press Office issued an urgent call to all Fashion Editors to immediately return any samples from the current or past seasons that were on loan (good luck with that one!).

Fondest Memories

Nicky Harris, February 13, 2010

Traveling over the years I am often reminded of all those favorite clothes that went missing. There was the white cashmere cardigan that went out with the towels in a Dusseldorf hotel and was found only to get lost again in the post. A great khaki shirt dress with a plaited leather belt that got left in a hotel in Galway never to be seen again. The Great Italian linen shirt that I hung behind a door in a Hotel on lake Garda and which I have never been able to replace. It was one of those great pieces that you could throw over a bathing costume, add a belt, some jewellery and you were good to go up to the balcony restaurant for a long lunch over -looking the lake… Or what about all those expensive sunglasses, too numerous to mention or the even more expensive French leather flip flops, the list goes on an on… One piece of advise, white clothes go missing in hotels quicker than you can run a bath. They just get swept up with the towels and end up in that great pile of lost loved clothes in the same place as all the odd socks in the world…….

Khaki makes a grand entrance (again)

Back to Basics

Khaki is all over the shop, literally. A great transitional Early Spring to high Summer colour and one that cleverly used can underpin a Summer wardrobe. These are safe staples that deserve a place in your wardrobe and are worth spending a little money on. Worn with soft nude pinks and a little black for now and teamed with bright colours later on in the season. This is the time of year when you can shop your wardrobe and if you haven’t got a khaki skirt or a good trench coat this may very well be the time to invest.

Next Monday marks the beginning of a competition for a fabulous pair of Italian leather gloves from Paula Rowan. To win all you have to do is sign up. The competition is open to any region of the world where there is a postal service!

Alexander Mc Queen RIP

Nicky Harris, February 11, 2010

It’s incredibly sad to have to post the News of the death of one of the worlds best Fashion Designers. Today the Fashion World is in shock. Alexander Mc queen was a true original, always pushing the boundaries of what is possible. The shoes showcased for this year are a prime example. Love or hate his fashion you can’t help admiring the originality beautifully and dramatically executed. I posted the video of this Fashion show for Spring Summer 2010 from last year. So here is the magnificent end of that show again…..

Shop Your Denim Wardrobe

The truth is that Denim has never gone away but it certainly wasn’t all over the catwalks and fashion press for some time. It’s back now and in a big 80’s way. It was shown top to toe on the catwalk and while I don’t think I’m quite ready to wear a denim shirt AND jeans together, I do think this will be an easy look to wear. It seems that anything goes, dresses, shorts, jackets and jeans in dark and light distressed denim in both boyfriend and skinny styles. So it’s time to shop your wardrobe. Take out all the denim you own. If it needs a tweak or two take it to an alterationist. If you want to distress it yourself take a pumice stone and with something hard under the fabric rub the stone vigorously over the top. In no time at all you will have the distressed look without the price tag.
