Women go on sale at Tel Aviv shopping center

Shoppers strolling through Dizengoff Center mall in Tel Aviv on Tuesday were confronted with a shocking widow display of women for sale, with price tags attached to them.

Upon closer inspection, it became obvious that the display was part of an installation by the Working Group Against the Trafficking of Women, part of a widespread campaign.

Seven unkempt young women stood in front of shoppers passing back and forth under a sign that read “Women for sale according to personal taste.” Some of the women were made up to appear as if they had been beaten, and all had price tags that listed details such as age, weight, dimensions, and country of birth.

The stated purpose of the installation is to solicit a large amount of signatures to submit to the Minister of Justice, in order to put forth a private member’s bill by Kadima MK Orit Zuaretz to criminalize johns who solicit sexual services. Members of the Working Group believe that a law like this could eradicate the phenomenon of trafficking in women.

“The victims of trafficking don’t get to rest during the day, so we don’t either,” explained lawyer Uri Keidar, one of the organization’s founders. “Actually, what we see here happens all the time all over the country, and here in the mall you simply cannot ignore the reality in front of your face.”

In the Navy

In The Navy

Navy is the serious alternative to black this Winter and I know from the sales of Falke 70 and 100 denier navy tights that this is a trend that has taken a firm hold. With its military and school background wearing top to toe navy is not such a strange idea. Perfect for a strong work wear look it smacks of power which given the uncertain times we live in is not a bad idea. Pair a beautiful navy or strong blue pussy bow blouse with a pencil skirt and crombie masculine style coat. Team a pair of navy trousers with a shirt and a pair of brogues. Accessorise with pearls and a vintage navy handbag which are to be found at any of the second hand stores and you will be ready for the most gruelling of business meetings.

Jazz up Camel

My Jaeger London Camel coat arrived in a box to the showroom during the week. Camel is the big story this Winter and this one ticks all the boxes for me. Sometimes though Camel against the skin is just too draining and so I reached for one of the bright wool Electronic Sheep samples in the showroom and the whole look is fab. I’m walking around with a label now dangling from the scarf as it’s a sample and will just have to have at least two or three for myself as they are so cosy and do a great brightening job for day time. The gorgeous silk scarves from Susannagh Grogan are simply a beautiful evening or special occasion option. The wonderful thing about both of the scarf companies is that they are Irish and right now I’m supporting great Irish design though come to think of it just shopping and keeping those tills ringing is supporting the Irish economy too!

Nina Divito gets the Gloves on

Tags: , , — Nicky Harris, October 28, 2010

I bumped into Nina Divito’s Mum a couple of weeks ago and as I love great young Irish designers I asked after her. I was delighted to hear how well she is doing and the other day when I was in Brown Thomas I stopped at the shoe department to admire Nina’s truly beautiful shoes. They are works of art and that’s no surprise as Nina was a paint and paper artist, drawing and painting fabulous pictures of wonderful shoes before she started to construct the real thing. They say things come in threes so I wasn’t surprised to find an invitation to her latest collections of paintings in my inbox today.

Nina Divito was very recently involved with Arthritis Ireland helping to get the message across that 1 in 5 people in Ireland are affected at some stage by Arthritis and it’s not just the elderly that are affected. As someone who has problems with my hands and feet, I think this is a really worthy cause, especially since there is an organisation that offers so much help and support to Arthritis sufferers.

The Weekly Lotto Dream

Tags: , , — Nicky Harris,

Well the 16 million has gone but there’s always next week. Most weeks I do the Lotto, it’s the weekly dream, occupying serious ‘car driving thinking time’. I actually hold off checking the numbers to keep the dream alive and wonder if other people do the same? I say each week that I’d be really happy with a small win and that’s true but a big one? that’s a different dream altogether. I’ve promised one of my friends a trip to the Antarctic on an Ice Breaker. I’ve told her that if she gets a call from me and I say ‘book it’ she’ll know I won! Do you have lotto dreams and if so what are they? I also dream of buying one particular house. I pass it most days on the way home and even though I have never been inside there is something about it that I love. I have a pet charity dream too, one that would change lives and be going long after I depart. What are your lotto dreams? Is it the house, the holidays or just something very simple like no more money worries?

The reason I thought about this is the Yellow Diamond collection from Tiffany & Co that has just arrived in the Luxury Hall in Brown Thomas. Would I go there? You bet I would….

The End of The Day

Yesterday I spent the afternoon at the Leopardstown Races before setting up for the Press day today in the Shelbourne Hotel for Yummie Tummie. It was a welcome break in the business of fashion and I couldn’t help noticing a real nip in the air so my cashmere coat and scarf, hat and gloves were welcome additions.

Picking a Winner

Today started at 5am so right now I’m running on empty! The venue was TV am and the plan was that Heather Thomson would do a live interview showing the new collection from Yummie Tummie and was to flag the customer event in Brown Thomas this afternoon. Through a tech glitch at the very last minute this didn’t go out live but will go out in the next few days. ( I was tweeting all day to let customers know!) One of the models got lost and had to be rescued from Fashion City in the dark. The shoes were all wrong but with a bit of juggling it was quickly sorted and there was so much dust that I started an allergy attack which I’ve been battling all day. All in a days work you could say and so when I finally arrived at the Shelbourne just as Heather Thomson had finished her first press presentation I was greeted by a face I hadn’t seen since my school days and one that I instantly recognised. It was Bairbre Power, Fashion Editor of the Independent Newspaper. I had spoken to her on the phone in the past few months when she had reminded me of school days and we kept missing each other at various fashion events but we were like long lost pals today.

It was brilliant to see other fellow bloggers and friends today, the beautiful Angela Scanlon, who featured in a great piece in the Holy Grail, the Sunday Times Style Magazine last week. What She Wears.ie, the brilliant Irish Online Fashion Magazine. The enigmatic Maria Fusco who now has her own blog, is active on Facebook and who always inspires me and the brilliantly tallented and always calm stylist Cathy O’Connor. The press over the next few days will be interesting to follow but it looks like we had a really great reaction from everyone who came.

Everyone looking Yummie today!

They enthused us all with their energy, passion and professionalism promoting a really great and unique product which has no equal. There is a competition running until Sunday in Brown Thomas. If you try on a Yummie Tummie you will be entered to win 7 Yummie Tummies, one for each day of the weeek!! So get in, try one one and if you aren’t already a fan you soon will be!

Yummie Tummie founder Heather Thomson visits Dublin

Tags: , , , , — Nicky Harris, October 26, 2010

Cathy and Aoife from PR Boutique have been working with me on the Press day for Yummie Tummie which starts at 5 am tomorrow. Heather Thomson, stylist to the stars and Yummie Tummie founder (with spades of American business energy) is in town to dazzle us with all the gossip from LA . Watch TV am tomorrow for all the latest updates on how the amazing Yummie Tummie works into your everyday wardrobe. For me it’s a coredrobe ‘go to’ item every day. Whether its a cami, top, pants or sexy teddie, I’ve now got used to the security and the smoothing down of all those lumps and bumps. I’m not the only one ,as lots of my fashion friends and serious stylists tell me they also wear them, as do lots of the buyers I meet on my travels. Yummie Tummie is no secret it’s a garment that’s good looking enough to shout out about.

If you want to meet Heather and her team head to Brown Thomas in Dublin tomorrow between 3-5pm. There is a terrific competition running until next Sunday all you have to do is try on a Yummie Tummie and swipe your BT card. You will be in with a chance of winning ‘7 Yummie Tummies’, one for each day of the week!!

This is one of the new 'Invisibles' with the shaping panel inside!

Home thoughts from today

Tags: , , , , — Nicky Harris, October 24, 2010

Today found me in town which is unusual for a Saturday unless it’s to the market in Temple Bar. Next Tuesday is Press day for Yummie Tummie with a visit from Heather Thomson, stylist and founder of Yummie Tummie and I needed to pop into Brown Thomas to double check some last minute details. On a whim I decided to get my hair cut. It’s been a total disaster since my impetuous nature resulted in a local hairdresser taking it from long to an uneven short in the space of ten minutes a few weeks ago. Ever since I have been taking the kitchen scissors to it and attempting to ‘fix’ the escalating problem. I headed to salon Oslo in the Georges Arcade and I must say I’m very happy with the result. I went into Om Diva to say hi to the always smiling owner Ruth at around 6pm just in time to bump into the fabulous Michael Leong, Milliner extraordinaire and uber talented hair stylist. Last week Michael had been working on Louise Kennedy’s latest collection and the images on his Facebook page look stunning. He really liked my hair and that’s high praise indeed. Michael was gathering interesting things (I have to say things) for a secret assignment which will become crystal clear in the next two weeks but one which I am sworn to secrecy about for now. I’m going to stop here for risk of letting something slip.

Here is a great video of Michael Leongs Little Black Hat Photo Shoot 2010

Now I keep bumping into lots of people who tell me they read my blog and I know who you are. I know for example that there is a person in Beijing well known to me who pops by and a fellow Fashion agent in the UK who is a regular reader. So, friends and regular readers, next time you drop by please leave a comment however brief.

Fur Flying

Nicky Harris, October 22, 2010

I met a friend recently who ‘inherited’ three fur coats from her Mother. I was given one by mine, who brought it to me one winter as she was living in a warm climate and no longer needed it. I remember her excitement when she got it in the 1970′s. It is a Siberian Fox Jacket. Mum thought mink was too common. Many of Mum’s friends had fur coats, an ultimate symbol of status and wealth in the 50′s and 60′s. I suppose it’s like the ‘It’ bag of today in many ways and there was little talk of ethical issues then. It’s a far cry from today when the gift of a real fur coat brings up huge ethical issues. Do you wear it on the basis that the animals are long since dead and it will keep you warm? Do you buy a fake fur which uses a huge carbon footprint in its making or do you only wear the coat indoors when the cold sets it thereby reducing your heating bill? Whatever you think, one thing is for sure, it is an issue that is still debated heavily especially in the UK where you really risk the wrath of the Animal Rights lobby being thrown at you.

My friend has decided she can’t wear the coats and can’t bear having them in her home and so they are destined for the charity shop. I on the other hand am heading to get Mum’s fox jacket out of Summer storage and will be happy to wear it this Winter.

What do you think? Take the Poll and lets find out what the consensus is?

Do you think it's ok to wear real fur?

Picture Postcard Perfect Isobel in Adare

Tags: , , , , , — Nicky Harris, October 20, 2010

Every so often I take off to do a recky and visit customers around the country. This morning fortified with my usual breakfast of porridge with added berries and seed and a cup of Rooibios tea I left at 7.30 and brought my Maltese Terrier, for company.

The weather has turned cold but it was dry and the sun shone. A perfect day for driving and buying Autumn fashion. That cold snap says it’s really time to start getting those Winter coats and boots on.

Adare, just near Limerick is a picture perfect village, full of thatched roofs and great boutiques. One of them is the fabulous Isobel and I was lucky that owner Kay Mulcaire was there when I called in. I fell in love with the Ann Louise Roswald and the Valentino Red. The fabulous Oky Coky and Paddy Campbell sit alongside another great label Jaeger London. If I was looking for a special occasion outfit there is no doubt that I would find something sublime here right down to the headdresses which Kay gets made specially by the fabulous Galway Milliner Suzie Mahony. Clothes at this Boutique are for the very discerning woman who demands a really great piece for her money. This is no cheap as chips shop, there are plenty of those which come and go. Isobel is very firmly one of the top shops in the country.
