Book Tales

Tags: , , — Nicky Harris, June 29, 2011

I suspect that along with a lot of people I have cut down my spending on magazines. There is one however that continues to draw me back and that is Harpers Bazaar. I feel that I would rather spend my money on books and have gathered some of the best Fashion related titles over the years. The newest one that is now available to Pre-order from Amazon and one that I am willing to fork out for is Harpers Bazaar, Greatest Hits by Glenda Bailey, Editor In chief. I am looking forward to perusing 300 high quality picture and from what I gather will have quite a bit of humour injected as only HB knows how. I’m curious to see the Agyness Deyn tribute to Michael Jackson and K

Last week I travelled to Scotland. A journey that started out at 2.30 am (yes, I did say am) for the drive to Larne to catch the early ferry to the sleepy Scottish Port of Troon whose only claim to fame it seems isthe Royal Troon Golf Course. By coincidence I found myself a few miles from St Andrews famous course some hours later but it wasn’t for the golf that I drove through Glasgow, through Edinburgh and over the Forth Bridge and northwards. It was to collect our new puppy, an Australian Labradoodle. Now you are probably thinking a) this woman is a total nut and b) what the heck is a Labradoodle and what has Australia got to do with it anyway. A Labradoodle is simply a Labrador Poodle cross and an Australian Labradoodle is a planned mix which also includes Cocker Spaniel and American cocker down the line. You can google and get loads of info if you are inclined but we wanted a long haired non shedding dog who is gentle and friendly with minimum possibility of inherited health problems. And so nearly one year from starting to research the non official breed we finally have ‘Riley’. We are totally in love with him and he is proving to be smart and lovable… so far, so good!

On the rails at Palua Boutique Leixlip

Paula Corbett opened Palua boutique in Leixlip in 2004 and I have known her since then. A fantastic gem of a boutique in this Kildare town. The trick with all the best boutiques is the expertise of the buyer in knowing exactly what to choose from the vast array of ranges. Paula is very skilled at picking exactly what her customers love and both mothers and daughters can find enough choice in both day and evening wear to satisfy them. On the rails this week at Palua…

More River Island Autumn Preview

Tags: , , , , — Nicky Harris, June 19, 2011

What is it about us fashion lot that has us rushing to the view and critique Autumn when we have barely had time to buy a pair of flip-flops or indeed wear them. For as long as I can remember this is the way fashion works. It moves through the seasons with alarming speed. The weather this (non) Summer so far is bitterly disappointing and ever the optimist in me keeps saying there is still July and August to come.

I’m in the middle of designing and creating a brand new garden and so I find myself wearing wellies and a mac most days while my gardening gloves are my only other accessory. I’m obsessed with climbers at the moment and have just bought four different varieties of Clematis and Honeysuckle and one Solanum ( which is the fancy name for a relation of the humble potato). My other obsession is our new puppy that is due to arrive this week. I will just tell you for now that his name is Riley (since he’s bound to have ‘the life of …’) he is chocolate in colour and I’m travelling to the ends if the earth to collect him! This blog may well turn into Nickysdogtales shortly!!

These are some of the photo’s from the River Island preview last week. All reminders of the 70′s and lots of great accessories. I ‘m not going to say I’m looking forward to Winter but some of these may just make it possible to combine cozy with fashionable.

Is Social Media for Keeps?

Tags: , , , — Nicky Harris, June 14, 2011

I had an interesting disussion over coffee yesterday with one of Irelands ex top models, business woman Asheena Naidoo and Maria Fusco, Irelands top Stylist and my good friend. Asheena arguing that she was already fed up with Facebook and Twitter and was reverting back to old-fashioned methods of doing business. Maria and I who are a good deal older are both avid users of the new platforms and so the discussion reached interesting levels of passion and debate. I do agree with Asheena when she says that Facebook is too much about marketing and selling and is losing it’s sociability. The generation who grew up with FB and Twitter are already getting fed up with it… a fickle lot. What we all wondered would be next?

Are Slipper Shoes the New Flats?

Are Slipper Shoes the New Flats? by nickysragtales featuring slip on loafers
Occasionally something new slips onto the radar and these Slippers by Charles Philip caught my eye in Style magazine yesterday. You know the type of thing I mean, a little snippet with a few lines by Wardrobe Mistress, Gemma Soames. They sell in Browns in London so I’m guessing that’s where they were spotted. I’m not sure though, they are very grandadish though they do look comfy and that for me is becoming increasingly important as I get older. I think with Capri pants or skinny jeans or even a pretty summer day dress they could look cool. They sell on-line in Bloomingdales if you feel like indulging I’m just wondering what you think?

Dip in the Nip 2011

Here goes, a post about hundreds of naked women swimming together at a secret location in Co Sligo on June 25th next. Not the Irish Naturists women’s convention but the now annual liberating Dip In The Nip fundraiser for Cancer services and research in Ireland. This year they hope to raise €100,000. This is the new Ireland and one where we can literally take off our clothes and run into the sea. It has become more than just a fundraiser but a way of saying we will bare all, we are not afraid, we are strong women and we can help others. Lets hope this year it will be warm but no matter the weather it will be a wonderful occasion.

If you have no plans for June 25th and have never considered doing such a thing then perhaps this is for you? If you are one of the top ten fundraisers you will be collecting a fabulous special edition Lady Umbrella T-shirt that was designed especially for the event.

Great Opportunity for Irish Designers

Tags: , , , — Nicky Harris, June 8, 2011

No 51 South William Street is destined to become a high end NYC Soho style Luxury Boutique filled with Irish Fashion, Jewellery, Millinery , Shoes and Accessories. South William Street was always filled with the business end of the Rag Trade and now it is being reclaimed though this time it is going public. With 15 spaces available and with 12 already filled this is going to be one great opportunity both for those who will be part of a great community and the public who will get a chance to buy the best of Irish design and fashion. I know that there are just a few spaces left for accessories and jewellery. I’m really looking forward to finding out who is going to part of this enterprise but I do know that Irish designer Jennifer Rothwell is one of those taking part. Personally I can’t wait to shop the best of Irish. It’s time to support Irish but only if it’s good and I’m betting that this enterprise will be the best of the best. If you are interested in finding out more then email eoin@precious.ie

Diva Catwalk samples arrive in when I should be in Dusseldorf!

Diva Catwalk

Diva Catwalk by nickysragtales on Polyvore.com

The perfect Dress collection from UK Diva Catwalk has just arrived into my showroom for the first time. Perfectly flattering in that great stretch fabric that looks so good on, perfectly priced, they retail from €109 euro and they have new styles coming every four weeks! This is cheering me up no end on a day when I should be in Germany at a Yummie Tummie meeting which I was so looking forward to. A certain threatened Pilots Strike literally grounded me as I just couldn’t take the risk of being stranded and not able to get home and so I was here to greet the new collection of twenty styles. They go on sale to the retailers very soon and should be in the shops in the next four weeks.

Check out super Irish stylist, Cathy O’Connor in the Sunday World next week where she wears one of the Diva dresses in an amazing styling feature.
