Heading home this evening after quite a stressful 12 days here in Vancouver I did get momentarily sidetracked from the main event and found a delightful and interesting bag designer. I have to admit to having a soft spot for both handbags of all types and have been searching for something special for yonks. My ideal bag is made of soft yet strong leather, has no big logo’s or labels so can’t be easily identifiable, is unique, a ‘one of a kind’ and has enough space for all my stuff. I think I may just have found it here in Vancouver. Ashley Watson is a young designer who cut her teeth in NY designing for a very successful company who reworked vintage clothing. While she was in NY she trawled the vintage shops and found herself buying leather jackets and turning them into bags. Friends kept asked for them and so the story continued….
Back in Vancouver Ashley Watson is very well known. The bags are to die for and even though they are completely hand made using vintage leather jackets the finish is superb with none of that homemade look that reworked vintage usually has. I met Ashley yesterday in my hotel and I’m definitely going to try to bring her label to Ireland. There are great styles though of course each bag is completely unique, lined in hemp with great pockets and with really comfortable handles. Take a look at the pictures and let me know what you think?
This is the day that the news from Ireland is pretty dire. The news from the UK is that of an impending Royal wedding. I’m having a déjà vu looking at that ring again. First time around I thought it was stunning and I have my own version to prove it! The competition is in full swing so if you are reading this do please have a go because it’s just a bit of fun and the prizes come from the super cult Irish T-Shirt company LadyUmbrella.
Etsy is one of the sites I go to in order to cheer myself off. It feels like one of those great craft/vintage markets that I always seek out whilst on holidays. So this is where I went this evening and forever a bag lady this is what I found. The wallets and purses are from Thailand and all are hand made.

I love the smell of beautiful leather, there’s nothing like it. Cheap leather smells bad and nothing can disguise it. I once bought a leather coat back from the Souk in Istanbul. It looked fabulous and was a real 70′s fashion find. Problem was it stank and nothing I could do to disguise the smell worked. I wore it a few times having doused myself in 4711 perfume. The last and memorable time I wore it was a journey on the bus into the Dandelion Green one Saturday was met with two Dublin women asking me ‘what in the name of Jaysus the stink was?’
It’s a far cry from those days now and if you want beautiful leather gloves, bags, shoes and boots then head to expert Paula Rowan in the Westbury Mall in Dublin. What Paula doesn’t know about leather isn’t worth talking about. The gloves are all her own designs and they are just sublime. Nothing finishes off a Winter outfit than a beautiful pair of gloves either as an accent or as a beautiful addition to the overall look. Long gloves, shearling and sheepskin, fingerless and driving gloves, gloves with fur and gloves in zebra and leopard, you name it and Paula Rowan has it. The bags are the sort of bag that are for life, the sort that gets better with age and isn’t plastered all over with a ‘name’. The boots and shoes are carefully chosen and edited from the best collections of the season and are spot on, I especially love the boots.
